Uncountable Grace

Opening Text: Romans 5:20 (NIV) ‘The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more.’

THE MESSAGE

Grace is never-ending. We cannot say the quantity of God grace in our life. God’s grace is immeasurable. If you tried to size the grace of God you’d face a difficult task. Literally, in the Greek, it says “Where sin increased, God’s grace super increased.”

You cannot out-sin the grace of God. You cannot out-sin God’s grace. It is infinite.
We overcome sin and temptation by grace. We overcome disease by grace. We overcome corona virus by grace. God likes you just as much on your bad days as He does on your good days. Whether, you have shown weakness all along to corona virus or acted strongly towards it by faith; whether you have relied on the regular daily news about corona virus; or whether you have strongly relied on the word of God; it makes no difference. His love is unqualified. He wants you to simply begin to trust on his word like never before. Titus 2:11 “For the grace of God that now brings salvation has now appeared unto all men…” That implies that Papa God even gave grace to unbelievers. The unbelievers could only be saved by grace. Grace teaches us to say no to corona virus.

Again, you would have noticed that St Paul introduced the law in our opening text. Now he says in verse 20: “The Law came in so that the transgression would increase.” The “transgression” is aparticular reference to the transgression of Adam. Verse 15: By the transgression of the one the many died;” Verse 17, by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one; and Verse 18: Through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men. This means that one crucial function of the law is to turn our original sin into actual transgressions of precise commandments. In the first place, it means that we are guilty in Adam and sinful by nature, and then the Law challenges us with the specific will of God such as “Don’t steal. Don’t lie. Don’t covet.” And the effect is that it turns sinful nature into specific sinful acts of transgression.

The second half of verse 20 takes a step closer: “But where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.” It means that the point of increased sin was for “super-abounding” grace. So the increase of sins – the multiplication of specific transgressions – was not the ultimate point of the Law. It was not an end in itself. It was the occasion for something God wanted to do that was more important and far greater, namely, to show his grace “super-abounding.” “Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.” So, much as the talk of corona virus seems to be increasing and many are gripped by fear; God grace in our life is super-abounding and we are gripped even more by faith and hope. Glory!
