Opening Text:
Ezekiel 22:30 “So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.”
The Message
An intercessor is one who stands in the gap for another. A go-between sets in because of the separation and deception that sin brings. I have again and again referred to Genesis 3: 1-5 to highlight on the origin of the fall of man. I judiciously explained the extent of the ‘Tree of Life’ God puts in the Garden of Eden. The fall of Adam and Eve prompted Papa God to initiate in the Old Testament a plan for intercession by instituting priests who could stand in the gap between Himself and His people.
Amongst these intercessors was the High Priest who possessed the highest and most important intercessory role amongst the people. Jesus in the New Testament, is our High Priest and we have become a holy priesthood unto our God (Hebrews 4:14; I Peter 2:9).
Every believer in Jesus Christ is an intercessor by virtue of His priesthood. It is not the job of a special elite force of “intercessors” in the church. Every believer is to be involved in the ministry of intercession. You are a part of this glorious office called to mediate for others. This is a serious office and you ought to commit yourself and time to it. You are not permitted to create vacancy in the same office you occupied.
Our opening text revealed that God found no one then to intercede for the fallen people. Terrible things are happening nowadays and many Christians are acting like God is going to automatically do it. Their common phrases are like, ‘Oh God do it for me!’ ‘Oh God I beg you remember Jesus your son!’ That is not it. God said I am looking for you to do it. He wants you to intercede for others. God wants to save people from destruction but He must find someone to stand in the gap for them. Isaiah 59 tells us that God’s arm is not so short that it cannot save nor His ears too dull that it cannot hear. God could not save because of sin and the absence of an intercessor. In this passage God could find no one to intercede.
God is not looking for specialists in detecting sin and faults in others and then proceed to expose and curse it. No, Jesus is looking for those who can see beyond the problem and seek the solution. God is not a sin finder. He is bigger than seeing sin at the altar. He is looking for those who can see God’s plan for the people and then stand in the gap as intercessors for them.
